Which car to choose for your trip: SUV or sedan?

The car class affects not only the rental cost but also where you'll be able to go. Here's what to choose for different travel scenarios.

Choosing a rental car class

Economy: VW Polo, Hyundai i10, Kia Picanto

Good for: 1–2 people, city and highway driving. Not good for: mountains with serious passes, or four people with luggage. Price: from €1,000–1,500/day.

Crossover: Hyundai Creta, Kia Sportage, Renault Duster

An all-rounder for most routes. Confident on paved mountain roads, fits 4 people and luggage, with reasonable fuel use. Price: €2,200–3,500/day.

If you're going to Kazbegi, Svaneti, Cappadocia or planning to wind along switchbacks — take a crossover, not a sedan.

SUV: Toyota Land Cruiser, Mitsubishi Pajero

Needed only for off-road — Tusheti, unpaved roads in Svaneti, dirt tracks in Cappadocia. On paved routes, paying extra for all-wheel drive isn't worth it. Price: from €6,500/day.

Minivan: VW Multivan, Toyota Hiace

For a group of 5–8. Higher fuel use and harder to park, but split across passengers it's often cheaper than taking two cars. Price: €5,000–8,000/day.

Premium: BMW, Mercedes, Audi

Rented for business trips or for the experience. Higher deposit (from USD 1,000), stricter age and experience requirements. Not designed for mountain road conditions — better for city and airport routes.

Tip from RentoRika

Book your car in advance — at least 3–5 days before the trip. In high season (June–September) popular models sell out fast.
